Slam Poetry/Poetry Slam

Since Verselandia is fast approaching, I thought it a good idea to provide some links & information about poetry slams.

How it All Started:

Marc Smith (So What!) is creator/founder of the Poetry Slam movement. As stated in the PBS television series, The United States of Poetry, a “strand of new poetry began at Chicago’s Green Mill Tavern in 1987 when Marc Smith found a home for the Poetry Slam.” Since then, performance poetry has spread throughout the world exported to over 300 cities large and small.”

Poetry Slam

— “The mission of Poetry Slam Incorporated (PSI) is to promote the performance and creation of poetry while cultivating literary activities and spoken word events in order to build audience participation, stimulate creativity, awaken minds, foster education, inspire mentoring, encourage artistic statement and engage communities worldwide in the revelry of language.”

The Poets:

10 Most Amazing Slam Poets on YouTube

— “There’s something about hearing a poem being performed that feels like listening to music: the delivery, pitch, and rhythm are tailored to create just the right reaction and hit you in a very specific way. Whether they’re talking about their first love, worst job, or unbelievable college experience, these slam poets use language and voice like no one else you’ve ever heard. Give them a listen at this link.”

YouTube

— There are over 60,000 videos related to slam poetry so you’re bound to find someone you like.

Suheir Hammad

— Okay, this is completely subjective and I’m pushing my own personal favorite here. That being said, give her a listen & I bet you’ll find her as amazing as I do. Should you find yourself liking her, check out her written work too.
